What the luxury tone changes

Expensive brands share a small set of habits: serif type, often in capitals, letters spaced wide, very little ornament, and dark or deep colour. Logo Lava makes the look from a tone, and the tone touches each of those in turn.

  • Type. Luxury adds 1.2 to the weight of serif fonts and 0.6 to scripts, and it favours the lighter cuts, weight 500 and under.
  • Case. It adds 1.2 to the chance of capitals, as much as the bold tone does.
  • Ground. It counts fully toward a dark background, and it raises the odds of a soft or radial one by 0.6 each.
  • Colour. 40 of the 311 palettes are tagged luxury, nearly all of them on a very dark ground with one or two bright colours against it.

The tone comes for free with some words, among them luxury, gold, maison, crown, diamond, velvet, royal, haute and platinum. With Maison in the name, Maison Aurelle drew a serif 56 times in 100. Adding tone=luxury, elegant took it to 64.

I have sold many short domain names to new businesses. A short name can work for almost any kind of business if the logo is good enough to sell the name for you.

Names that do not sound expensive

Most luxury names are not luxury words. They are surnames, places and made-up words, and the engine reads what it can. These are invented:

NameFiled asTones it gave
Maison Aurellenothingluxury, elegant, from maison
Halden Fine Jewelryfashionelegant, calm, creative, modern, and no luxury at all
Noir Hoteltravelbold, edgy, energetic, friendly
Velour & Vinefoodfriendly, playful, handmade
Ashgrove Estate WinessportsWines loses its ending and is read as win
Gold Crown Detailingautoluxury and elegant from gold and crown, on a car business

So the grid at the top sets the tone by hand. When you pass tone=, the tones the name brings are not thrown away but kept at about a third of their weight, so Noir Hotel still leans a little bold.

Capitals and space

At least three times I have seen a name that sounded ordinary look striking once it was set in capitals or in a serif. Wide letter spacing in capitals is the most recognisable luxury habit, and it is one setting. One name, one seed, capitals throughout, and only tracking changes:

One name, one seed. Only tracking changes.

Spacing suits a short name. On a long one, the logo turns into a line of type too wide for a small screen, so give a long name less spacing, or use its initials as the mark.

Some made-up houses

Only 33 symbols carry the luxury tag, 20 shields and 13 crowns, so a luxury logo often has no mark, or borrows one. A thin rosette or a spark sits well beside serif capitals.

All invented names. Each card opens in the Logo Maker with its settings.

The brand kit draws the rest from your one design: favicons, square profile pictures, a share image, social banners, black and white versions for embossing and stamps, and a one-page brand sheet. A single kit is USD 29, or the Starter plan includes 5 kits a month for USD 9 a month. A kit bought on its own is yours for good. A kit from a plan's allowance may be used while the plan is active and for 30 days after.

Initials are the other classic luxury mark, and the monogram page covers them. A minimal logo starts from the same idea of taking things away, with sans type instead of serifs. The vintage settings keep the serifs but add muted colour and seals. For a salon or a spa, the barber and salon page shows how the engine reads those names first.

For developers

Use it from code

tone=luxury, elegant sets the type, case and background odds, fontcat=serif fixes the type group, and scheme=dark picks the ground.
