How it reads a shop name

The engine files 47 words under beauty, barber, salon, hair, cuts, spa, lash, brow and stylist among them. A name with one of them gets the tones elegant, friendly and luxury, which lean toward serif and script type and softer palettes. The beauty marks are 105 symbols in a handful of families: sprigs (22), rosettes (20), sparks (15), petals (14), spirals (12), drops and fans (8 each) and hearts (6).

What it does not have is a pair of scissors, a comb, a razor or a barber pole. So the marks on this page are ornaments, not pictures of the trade, and a name sometimes pulls the wrong one in.

The shopping bag problem

The word shop asks for a shopping bag, and the engine finds shop inside barbershop. With no settings, Copper Pole Barbershop drew a bag for 63 marks in 100. Writing it as Barber Shop did not help much: 59.

That is why the grid at the top passes a family= list. It keeps the draw to rosettes, sparks, fans, spirals, sprigs and drops, and the bag never comes up. Other names misfire in their own way. These are invented, and here is what the engine read:

NameFiled asWhy
Copper Comb BarbersbeautyBarbers is on the list.
Juniper Hair StudioartStudio is an art word, and the last word counts extra.
Sable Nail LoungeconstructionNail is filed with hammers and lumber.
Fox & Fern GroomingpetsTo the engine, grooming is for dogs.
Clipper & CombmediaClipper is read as clip, as in a video clip.

For any of these, add industry=beauty to put the tones and marks back.

A salon and a barbershop are not the same look

The engine gives every beauty name the same three tones, so a nail bar and a straight-razor barbershop start in the same place. Most barbershops I can picture want something heavier and older. These two settings split them:

Salon

industry=beauty&family=petal,rosette,sprig,spark

Barbershop

tone=vintage,bold&fontcat=slab,serif,display&symbol=none

The barbershop settings drop the mark on purpose. With no pole or razor to draw, a strong name in slab or display type looks more like a barbershop sign than any ornament does. The vintage page has more on that look.

All invented names, half with the salon settings and half with the barbershop ones.

On the window and the booking page

Click a card to open it in the Logo Maker. The PNG and SVG downloads are free and need no account, and the SVG is what a sign maker wants for the window or the door.

A shop also needs a square picture for the booking app and Instagram, a favicon, and a one-colour version for loyalty cards and stamps. The brand kit draws all of them from your one design. A single kit is USD 29, or the Starter plan includes 5 kits a month for USD 9 a month. A kit bought on its own is yours for good. A kit from a plan's allowance may be used while the plan is active and for 30 days after.

Initials, seals and serifs

A salon named after its owner often looks good as initials. The monogram page shows how to make one. A round seal suits a barbershop that wants to look established: layout=emblem, covered on the badge and emblem page. Keep the name short for it, since the text shrinks to fit the seal. For a spa or a high-end salon, the luxury settings give serif type, capitals and dark grounds.

For developers

Use it from code

The family list keeps to the beauty marks that suit a barber and a salon alike, and leaves out the shopping bag a name with shop in it would otherwise draw.
