Eight names, one right reading

I have spent years selling domain names, and I like names like these: a plant or a place, then the trade. Bluegrass Yard Co, Hedgerow Grounds, Tallgrass Landscaping. They sound local and they are easy to remember. They are also hard for a logo engine, and this page is about why.

The engine does not know the words lawn, grass, yard, mow, turf or hedge, and it has no entry for landscaping either. So it reads whatever else it can find, sometimes inside another word. I made up eight names and ran them through:

NameFiled asWhy
Cedar Row LandscapesoutdoorsCedar is a tree word. The only one it got right.
Tallgrass Landscapingreal estateIt finds land at the start of landscaping.
Greenway Lawn CarehealthCare is a health word, and it comes last.
Fieldstone Lawn & GardenhomeGarden is filed with homes and kitchens.
Rooted Garden DesignartDesign is an art word.
Hedgerow GroundstechIt finds edge inside hedgerow.
Sweetgrass Outdoor LivingmediaLiving is read as live, as in a live stream.
Bluegrass Yard ConothingNo word on any list.

Three settings, all needed

The closest industry is outdoors, with 132 words and 142 symbols. But it was built for hiking and the sea as much as for gardens: 56 of those symbols are waves, anchors and fish. So the industry alone would give a lawn company a fair chance of an anchor.

The grid at the top passes three settings. industry=outdoors sets the business, family=leaf, sprig, tree, sun keeps the mark to things that grow and the sun they grow in, and tone=natural, calm sets the type and colour, since a name the engine cannot read gets no tones of its own. One name, one seed, and only the family changes:

One name, one seed. Only family changes.

Leaves and sprigs suit lawn care and planting. Trees suit tree work and bigger grounds. A sun works for a garden centre or anything sold as outdoor living.

Some made-up companies

Each card opens in the Logo Maker with its settings, where the font, the colours and the mark can be changed one at a time.

On the trailer, the yard sign and the invoice

Click a card to open it, then download the PNG or the SVG. Both are free and need no account. The SVG is the file to send for a trailer wrap or yard signs, since it scales without going soft.

The brand kit adds the rest from your one design: a favicon, square pictures for map listings and Facebook, and black and white versions for invoices and shirts. A single kit is USD 29, or the Starter plan includes 5 kits a month for USD 9 a month. A kit bought on its own is yours for good. A kit from a plan's allowance may be used while the plan is active and for 30 days after.

Crew shirts and other marks

For shirts and caps, a badge or a round seal holds up well at small sizes; the badge and emblem page shows both. If none of the four families is right, the icon catalogue lists every family by name, and any of them can go in the family list. A company that also builds patios and walls might borrow from the construction page and add steps or cube.

For developers

All three settings are needed here: the engine does not know the words lawn or yard, so it needs telling what the business is.
