Which trades it recognises

The engine files 50 words under construction, among them builders, roofing, plumbing, concrete, masonry, carpentry, paving, welding, remodeling and lumber. A name with one of them gets two tones, bold and trustworthy, which favour heavy sans and slab type and plain colour. So most companies named after their trade come out right.

The ones that do not are worth knowing about. I ran some invented company names through it:

NameFiled asWhy
Halvorsen BuildersconstructionBuilders is on the list.
Benton PlumbingconstructionSo is plumbing.
Granite Peak General ContractinglegalContracting is read as contract, a legal word, and it comes last.
Brightline ElectricenergyElectric is on the energy list, with power plants and solar.
Ash & Oak CarpentryoutdoorsAsh and oak are both tree words. Two beat one.
Mercer HVACnothingHVAC is on no list, so the engine has only the sound of the letters.

Contracting is the one I would watch. Lots of firms end their name with General Contracting, and because the last word counts extra, the whole business tips over into law: serif type, corporate tones, the marks the engine keeps for law firms.

A thin set of marks, so the grid adds two

Only 38 symbols carry the construction tag, in three families: house (17), gear (17) and cube (4). Houses and gears are literal pictures, which the engine draws much less often unless a word in the name asks for them (build, builder, repair and tools ask for the gear). Left alone, Mercer HVAC got a house, gear or cube for about 1 mark in 100.

So the grid at the top passes family=house, gear, cube, shield, steps. That is the three construction families plus shields, which look solid and insured, and steps, which look like something being built up. It also passes tone=bold, trustworthy. A name the engine cannot read gets its default lean, a little modern and a little friendly, and a roofer does not want friendly.

All invented names. Click any of them to open it in the Logo Maker.

Initials and lower case

Trade names are full of initials: HVAC, or the owner's, as in RJ Hale Contracting above. Sometimes the engine sets a name in lower case, and then HVAC turns into hvac. One logo, one seed, and only case changes:

One name, one seed. Only case changes.

Pass case=title or case=upper to stop it. Title case raises the first letter of each word and leaves the rest as you typed it, so HVAC stays HVAC.

From the truck door to the quote

Click a card to open that logo in the Logo Maker and download it as PNG or SVG. It is free and needs no account. Send the SVG to whoever does your signs and vinyl, since it scales to the side of a trailer without going soft.

The rest of the files a company needs (a favicon, square pictures for map listings and Facebook, black and white versions for stamps, invoices and hard-hat stickers) come in the brand kit, all drawn from your one design. A single kit is USD 29, or the Starter plan includes 5 kits a month for USD 9 a month. A kit bought on its own is yours for good. A kit from a plan's allowance may be used while the plan is active and for 30 days after.

Badges for crews, serifs for old firms

A badge fits a crew shirt or a cap. layout=badge puts the mark and the name in a wide chip, and layout=emblem in a round or shield seal; the badge and emblem page shows both. For a family firm that has been around a long time, the vintage style settings give slab and serif type with muted colour, which reads as established.

For developers

Use it from code

Three settings: the industry, a family list that adds shields and steps to the three construction families, and a tone for names the engine cannot read.
