Seeds
A seed is a whole number that stands for one roll of the dice. Keep it, and the logo stays the same.
B Klug, updated October 25, 2026
When you leave a design choice open, such as the font or the symbol, Logo Lava picks one at random. The seed controls that randomness. Send the same text, the same options and the same seed, and you get the same logo: the same SVG, byte for byte, and the same PNG pixel for pixel. This is a promise the project keeps on purpose, so a logo URL is safe to paste into a page, a document or a database.
Pinning a logo
Leave out seed and every request returns a new logo. The seed that was used comes back in the X-LogoLava-Seed response header and in the seed field of the JSON form. Copy it into your URL to keep that design. The number below is only an example, since every request without a seed returns a different one.
curl -sI "https://api.logolava.com/v2/logo.png?text=Mossgate+Coffee" | grep -i x-logolava-seed
x-logolava-seed: 1767624513Seeds are whole numbers from 1 to 2147483647. A value outside that range is brought inside it, and anything that is not a number is replaced with a warning. Seeded images are served with a one year, immutable cache header, so a browser or a CDN keeps them after the first load.
Changing one thing
Each kind of decision, such as font, colour or symbol, draws from its own stream of numbers. If you pin a seed and then set one option, the options you did not touch usually keep their values. That is how the pictures on the parameters page work: one name, one seed, and a single option varied. Setting font swaps the typeface and leaves the rest alone, and setting bg=aurora swaps the background.

Rolling a new one
To explore, change the seed. Any whole number works, and nearby numbers are unrelated, so 41 and 42 give very different logos. To get a batch in one call, use the variations endpoint, which returns a list of seeds with a ready-made URL for each.
Generations
The engine has a generation number, sent as the X-LogoLava-Gen header. It is 1 today and is frozen: an existing combination of options and seed will not be redrawn differently, even when new fonts, symbols or palettes are added. New catalogue entries can be requested by id straight away, but they stay out of the random draw for generation 1. If the drawing engine ever has to change in a way that alters existing logos, it ships as generation 2, and generation 1 stays available.
The AI mode follows the same rule once a brief exists. The first request for a name makes a brief and stores it, and every later seed reads from that stored brief. See AI mode.
